Preparing for a Job Interview
When you are in the job market trying to get your next big offer, knowing how to prepare for a job interview is a must.
Job interviews are a critical part of the job search process.
For one, they are your best chance to showcase to your potential employer why you are the best candidate for the job.
Also, they are a great way to substantiate the claims made in your resume that got you here.
But how should you go ahead and nail the interview ?
I frequently tell my clients that success in anything you do is mainly a function of 3 ingredients –
- a structured pathway,
- capable mentorship, and
- deliberate practice.
While the first two are external factors, practice and preparation is an internal factor that you need to push hard on.
Preparing for a job interview can help you get any job you want – if the practice is correct , and sincere.
So, here are some tips to help you prepare for a successful job interview.
7 Tips to prepare for a successful job interview
1. Research the Company
Before your interview, take the time to research the company you’re interviewing with. You should know their values, mission, and goals.
This will help you answer questions related to the company’s culture and why you’d be a good fit. You can also use this knowledge to make a good impression by asking relevant questions.
2. Prepare Your Resume and Cover Letter
Your resume and cover letter should be tailored to the job you’re applying for. Update your resume to include the most recent experience and accomplishments. Highlight any skills or qualifications that make you stand out from other candidates.
Most importantly, take the time to proofread your documents for grammar, spelling, or any other content related errors.
3. Practice Interview Questions
Before the interview, come up with answers to commonly asked questions. Most questions will come from the following sources:
- Your Resume
- Job Description
- Company mission, vision, values, products, news
- Recruiters specialisation (Check their Linkedin profile)
- Case questions related to the product, or guesstimates
These questions cover 90% of interviews. If you are confident on 90% of interview questions, you can easily handle the 10% random questions that may appear in the interview.
Once you have written down the questions, prepare answers and examples from your experience to support your answers.
You may also want to practise with a friend or family member. This will help you become more comfortable speaking about your experience and qualifications. It will also help you think on your feet and give more detailed answers.
4. Plan Your Outfit
Dress to impress for your interview. Wear something professional and appropriate for the job you’re interviewing for. Make sure your outfit is clean and pressed.
5. Get to Know the Interviewer
If possible, try to get to know the person you’re interviewing with. You can look up their LinkedIn profile or find out more information about them on the company’s website. Knowing more about the interviewer can help you make a good impression and stand out as a candidate.
6. Bring Notes
If allowed, bring a notepad and pen to your interview. This way, you can jot down any questions you may have and make notes during the interview.
7. Ask Questions
At the end of the interview, you should be given the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. This is a great chance to show your interest in the job and the company.
By applying these tips for preparation, you can show potential employers why you are the best candidate for the job and increase your chances of getting the job.
